The Story of the Thorn
It all started in 1972, when our team of master cider makers were tasked with crafting a West Country cider to beat all others. They were inspired by the mysterious Blackthorn tree, whose fruit becomes sweeter from enduring a harsh, bitter winter. It symbolises the truth that many of life’s sweetest moments come from embracing and conquering the challenges life throws at you.
Today, Blackthorn is still lovingly pressed and crafted at our cider mill in Shepton Mallet, and is affectionately known by the locals as ‘Thorn’.
We only use ‘Bittersweet’ cider apples in our secret blend to create the refreshingly crisp Blackthorn taste. They have the perfect combination of low acidity and high tannins that gives Blackthorn a more complex and full-bodied character than other ciders, but that’s what makes it so rewarding. Developed by an expert team of Somerset Master Cider Makers, tasked with crafting a cider to beat all others, Blackthorn Gold is made using a secret blend of bittersweet cider apples, delivering a distinctive and unforgettable medium-dry taste that remains true to its Somerset roots.
Blackthorn Dry is pressed and blended to the original recipe by our Master Cider Makers in the heart of Somerset. Crafted with only the best Bittersweet cider apples to deliver a traditional, full-bodied West Country dry cider, the result is a balance between fruit and acidity, finishing with a crisp and sharp aftertaste.
